We were diverted to the north by low cloud on the flight into Dave Henry Lodge and were rewarded with excellent views of the Mt Robson massif. After a companion rescue practice with deeper burials (a bit harder to locate) we went off to dig a couple of pits and ski moderate angle powder slopes in the Glades. We toured up to Park Bowl and Miner’s Basin on the following two days and enjoyed multiple moderate angle powder runs in both areas. The following two days dawned windy and very cold (-25C and -30C in am) and so we did afternoon ski outings in Pig Runs (wind affected, except in protected glades below) and the Glades (nice powder in the protected gully).
Snow stability seemed somewhat touchy above Jan 24 melt/freeze/hoar layer, and so we restricted our runs to moderate angle terrain. This was a bit frustrating for some in not being able to explore steeper runs, particularly with the slower snow in the cold temperatures. We were happy to stay warm enough with no frozen fingers and toes, and a good wood stove in the hut with abundant supply of dry wood (which we had to split). We ate very well, played lots of intense games of dice (10,000), and celebrated “Valentines week” by building a Lego flower as a team event! The Lodge may be rustic and on the smaller side, but is well loved by its owners (Headwaters Outfitting) and has a good, warm, peaceful feel.
