The loop hike on Lusk ridge starting at Sibbald pond is very pleasant. The uptrail is a gradual ascent that starts on an old road then zig-zags up a ridge to a viewpoint from which one can see the mountains towards Mt Baldy and Yamnuska.
The trail then follows the ridge along an escarpment before reaching a small peak where we stopped from lunch #1. The route continues along the ridge in an easterly direction over a larger bump before descending to a clearcut on the descent ridge. Plenty of views as we traversed varied terrain.
There were a lot of mushrooms of different types growing throughout the forested areas. On the uptrack we did find some raspberry bushes but the clearcut area on the descent ridge had mega patches. Very tasty little berries. The coordinator had never seen bear signs before during several hikes on this ridge so did not consider the possibility that there would be any feasting on the raspberries. There were two black ones that skedaddled as we approached. It is highly recommended to stay off this easterly ridge during berry season so as to not disturb the bears who need to fatten up for winter.
The weather was excellent and the trip very enjoyable at a leisurely pace thanks to the two Johns who came along for their first time on this section of Lusk ridge. Distance 10.5Km, elevation approx. 700m, time 5hr 15mins which included two 30 mins lunch breaks.
