Sofa Mountain Scramble on 25-Jul-2025

As we started up the Sofa Mountain trail, it was clear - even lower down - that the winds were strong higher up. However, as we got higher the lenticular clouds softened, and even provided some protection from the morning sun.

A good pace was set up the ridge toward the ascent gullies. By this time, the wind had become quite reasonable. An unusual sighting was numerous Mormon crickets moving around on the open ridge.

At the cliff band we regrouped, put on helmets, stashed poles, and headed up the gullies. The rock here is good, making for some very enjoyable scrambling.

After a quick lunch we headed for the final slopes of the peak.

Soon it was time to head for the descent down the NE ridge. Cairns now mark the route which involves easy scrambling, but requires care due to the loose rock.

Lower down, the ridge provided some interesting flowers.

Once back to the creek, we relaxed and watched a lazy marmot before heading out the trail back to the cars.

Thanks to Susan, Cathy, Bob and Margot for joining me on this trip - one of the best in the Waterton area.
